FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who is Virginia NORML, and what do you do?

Virginia NORML is a 501 (c )(4) nonprofit organization registered in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and an accredited state chapter of NORML, The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, located in Washington DC. Our goal is to educate the public about cannabis in order to sway public opinion so that the responsible use by adults will no longer be subject to criminal prosecution and penalties. Virginia NORML is the voice for thousands of marijuana consumers in the Commonwealth.

2. Why do you want to change marijuana laws?

1. They don't work - adults and children are not prevented from using marijuana.

2. They make marijuana more available to kids -- since marijuana sellers aren't required to check age, kids are easily able to get it.

3. They cost millions of taxpayer dollars, with nothing in return -- over $100 million in Virginia, according to a recent estimate.

4. They inhibit freedom and create disrespect for law enforcement.

5. They create criminals out of law-abiding people.

3. How can I help make pot legal in Virginia?

Join Virginia NORML!

Find your closest regional group, and attend a meeting!

Now the boring part...

Find your state Delegate and Senator and write to them explaining that you want marijuana to be legal in Virginia, and for medical use.  Make it short and sweet, and professional.

Find out what's going on with marijuana arrests in your city or county.  Ask for police data on arrests for possession.

Attend your city council or county board of supervisors meetings.  Get to know your officials.  Bring up marijuana laws and see who supports us.

4. Do you have meetings?

Yes, we have meetings on the third Tuesday of every month, at Baja Bean in Richmond:

Baja Bean
1520 W. Main St.
Richmond, VA 23220

Meetings start at 7pm.  Usually we get there a bit early to hang out.

Our regional groups also hold at least monthly meetings. Check with each one for the schedule.

5. Are there any other NORML chapters in Virginia?

Yes, there are six regional groups around the state.

We are hoping to start campus chapters at colleges and universities.
If you'd like to start one, contact our campus chapter coordinator. Or
contact NORML at Christopher Newport University, Virginia's only current campus chapter.
